Pet Owners: How Dogs and Cats Affect Your Duct System (And What to Do About It)

2026-02-15 Home Pros Team

How Your Furry Friends Are Affecting Your Home's Air Quality

We love our pets — and clearly so does Parkland County. Walk through any Stony Plain or Spruce Grove neighbourhood and you will see dogs in every other yard. Cats are just as popular. But as much as we love our pets, they create unique challenges for our home HVAC systems and indoor air quality.

What Pets Put Into Your Air

Dogs and cats contribute several contaminants to your indoor air:

  • Pet dander: Tiny flakes of skin that are shed constantly. Dander is microscopic — you cannot see it, but it circulates freely through your ductwork. It is also one of the most common allergens.
  • Pet hair/fur: Obvious and visible, pet hair gets sucked into your return vents and accumulates in the duct system. During shedding season (spring and fall), the volume increases dramatically.
  • Saliva particles: Dried saliva from grooming becomes airborne and circulates through the HVAC system.
  • Outdoor contaminants: Dogs track in pollen, dirt, grass, and other outdoor particles that eventually make their way into the ductwork.

What Happens Inside Your Ducts

When pet hair and dander enter your duct system, here is what happens:

  • Hair collects at bends and joints in the ductwork, creating clumps that restrict airflow
  • Dander coats the interior surfaces of ducts, building up over time
  • Every time the furnace cycles, these contaminants get recirculated through your home — 5-7 times per day
  • The furnace filter catches some of it, but not all. Dander particles are small enough to pass through many standard filters
  • Over months, the buildup becomes significant enough to impact airflow, efficiency, and air quality

How Often Should Pet Owners Get Ducts Cleaned?

For homes with pets, we recommend:

  • One dog or cat: Annual cleaning (same as the general recommendation, but more important to stick to the schedule)
  • Multiple pets: Every 8-10 months, or twice a year if you have 3+ pets
  • Heavy shedders (Huskies, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, etc.): Every 8-10 months
  • Pet + allergy sufferer in the home: Every 8-10 months minimum

Tips for Pet Owners Between Cleanings

Between professional cleanings, there are steps you can take to minimize the impact of pets on your air quality:

  • Upgrade your furnace filter: Use a MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter instead of the basic MERV 8 that most homes use. Higher MERV ratings capture smaller particles like pet dander. Note: check that your system can handle the increased airflow resistance of a higher MERV filter.
  • Change filters more frequently: Pet owners should change their furnace filter every 2-3 months instead of the typical 3-4 months.
  • Groom pets regularly: Regular brushing (ideally outdoors) removes loose hair before it enters the air. During shedding season, daily brushing makes a noticeable difference.
  • Vacuum frequently: Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Vacuum at least twice a week, paying special attention to areas near return vents.
  • Keep vents clear: Make sure furniture and pet beds are not blocking supply or return vents. Blocked vents create dead zones where pet hair accumulates.
  • Consider an air purifier: A quality HEPA air purifier in your main living area can supplement your HVAC filtration and capture airborne pet dander.

The Difference Clean Ducts Make for Pet Owners

Pet owners consistently report the most dramatic improvement after professional duct cleaning. The reduction in dust, the improvement in air freshness, and the decrease in allergy symptoms are all more noticeable in homes with pets because there was more contamination to begin with.

One of our Stony Plain customers with three dogs told us: "I did not realize how much pet hair was in our ducts until I saw what came out. My daughter's allergy symptoms improved within days of the cleaning."

Our Flat-Rate Advantage for Pet Owners

Here is something pet owners especially appreciate about Home Pros Group: our $345 flat rate covers every vent in your home, no matter what comes out of them. Some per-vent companies have been known to charge extra for "heavily contaminated" ducts — which pet owners' ducts usually are. We never do that. $345, every time, regardless of condition.

Which Pets Create the Most HVAC Contamination?

Not all pets are equal when it comes to HVAC impact. Here is a rough ranking from most to least contamination:

  1. Heavy-shedding dogs (Huskies, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Labs) — these breeds produce enormous amounts of hair and dander, especially during spring and fall shedding seasons.
  2. Cats — cat dander is particularly potent and spreads easily through ductwork. Indoor cats contribute more than outdoor cats since they spend all their time inside.
  3. Medium-shedding dogs (Beagles, Bulldogs, most mixed breeds) — moderate hair and dander, still significant over a year.
  4. Low-shedding dogs (Poodles, Schnauzers, Bichons) — produce less hair but still generate dander.
  5. Small animals (hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs) — if their cage is in a room with a vent, bedding material and dander enter the duct system.
  6. Birds — feather dust and dander are lighter and spread further through ductwork than you might expect.

The Financial Case for Regular Cleaning with Pets

Pet owners who skip annual duct cleaning pay for it in other ways: higher energy bills from restricted airflow (pet hair clumps at duct bends), more frequent furnace filter replacements, faster furnace wear from working against contaminated ducts, higher allergy medication costs for sensitive family members, and more frequent house cleaning due to recirculating dust and dander.

At $345 per year for a complete cleaning, the investment pays for itself many times over. Your HVAC system runs better, your home is cleaner, and your family breathes easier.
